The Squad’s pilot screenplay will also be penned by Anthony Del Broccolo, who also worked as a writer and co-executive producer for CBS’ Big Bang Theory. Additionally, Warners Bros, the television company will be reteaming with Galecki and Del Broccolo to produce The Squad for NBC.
The Hollywood Reporter explains that the sitcom will revolve around a group of friends looking for both “companionship and common ground in their mutual love of eSports.” In hindsight, there’s an immense amount of potential for the series. Giving it the chance to explore what it means to find a place to fit in, after years of feeling like outcasts. Currently, there is no news regarding the release date since the show has not been picked up for series. On top of that, there’s also no word about the other cast members who will be joining Galecki on the show.
On the other hand, this is not the first time an eSports themed sitcom is in the talks. Prior to The Squad, CBS also pitched in a pilot order for an untitled single-camera series. It is said that the story revolves around a retired pro basketball star buying an eSports franchise in an effort to reconcile with his estranged son. As competitive gaming is growing, the eSports sector is expected to generate more than US$1 billion (~RM4.19 billion) in 2019 alone. On that note, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that television producers and studios have begun tilting their views towards making an eSports-themed sitcom.
