The device adopts a new class of near-eye displays packed in a sunglasses-like form factor. It utilises a combination of holographic optics and polarisation-based optical folding, which allows for thinner and smaller displays that are less than 0.35 inches thick.

While the prototype is functional, Facebook notes that it could only output in monochrome for now. The company promises that the tech will be capable of providing a wider colour range, as well as better resolutions that would eliminate visible pixels.

However, don’t hold your breath if you’re looking to wear one of these anytime soon. According to Facebook Reality Labs, the prototype is still unrefined and still has to address issues such as battery life, connectivity and compatibility with conventional eyeglasses.
