The reason behind the switch lies in the nature of the EdgeHTML engine used by Edge; Windows 10’s current default browser. Sources close to Windows Central cite instability and its general lack of popularity, from users and developers alike. This is in contrast with Chromium, which is what Google’s Chrome browser is made with.
Microsoft’s new Chromium-based browser is codenamed Anaheim internally. It’s not yet known if it will continue to use the Edge name, or if it will use the current code name – or even have a new one of its own – when it gets officially announced. It remains to be seen if this will finally make Microsoft’s default browser one that’s popular with the users. While the Chromium base will mean that it will work about as well as the very popular Chrome browser, that doesn’t necessarily translate to more users. (Source: Windows Central)
