On top of the list for the Opensignal Global Awards 2020 are what the company called as the Global Winners and Leaders across five different metrics including Video, Voice App, Download Speed, Upload Speed, and 4G Availability. None of the five Malaysian telcos that were taken into account for the Opensignal Global Awards 2020 made it to the Global Winners or Global Leaders list. Frankly speaking, you can see the significant gap between our telcos and the winners just by comparing the results from this award with the Mobile Network Experience Report for Malaysia from April 2020. However, the story is slightly different for the Global Rising Stars section of the award though. Covering four categories including Video, Download Speed, Upload Speed, and 4G Availability, it honours the top 30 mobile operators throughout the world that have shown major improvements from 1H 2019 to 1H 2020. One particular Malaysian telco actually appeared in each of these four metrics and believe it or not, it is U Mobile. Just check out these charts below: Being the second smallest operator out of the five Malaysian telcos covered by Opensignal Global Awards 2020, it is hard not to feel perplexed about the result above. Then again, the Global Rising Stars awards are not focusing on sheer performance numbers but they are looking at the improvement rate instead. At the very least though, it is interesting to see that the data from Opensignal shows that U Mobile is improving in a significant manner. This is especially given that it was only in 2017 that the company stopped using Maxis infrastructure (in stages) to fully depend on its own network.
