Under the said implementation, the Terragraph wireless network, which was developed by Facebook and able to deliver gigabit speed, acts as the link to the GiGA Wire network within a building. Through the usage of GiGA Wire, it enables users to utilize Internet at a much higher speed than DSL technology while still using existing copper wiring.

According to the live demonstration at the press conference in Penang Chinese Town Hall earlier today (shown below), the Terragraph – GiGA Wire combo network apparently able to deliver around 200Mbps. As a comparison, the live demo was run side-by-side together with TM’s DSL-based Streamyx which we assumed was a 4Mbps plan given the results of its speed test. Aside from higher download speed, the demonstration also showed that the network has much higher upload speed and lower latency when compared to Streamyx. At this moment, YTL Communications has yet to reveal its future plan for Terragraph and GiGA Wire although its CEO has stated that the company is now planning to deploy them outside of George Town.
